Keep it Old School

Keep it Old School

"Online [course] offerings in all disciplines are proliferating at a rapid rate" (“Student Performance Online Vs. Onground”).  The traditional classroom setting has, in fact, been found to have a higher achievement rate than that of virtual classrooms.  Three advantages of attending an actual classroom over taking an online class are better teacher-student relations, motivational learning environment, and mind-broadening social interactions with other students.
Knowing that the professor is there to lend a helpful and caring hand gives students the confidence and support they need to succeed in their studies.  "[O]nline students fared significantly worse on the most complex material" (Brown).  Having an actual face-to-face student-teacher relationship benefits students in many ways.  Some students struggle with the anxiety of having to teach their selves the material when taking an online class.  This anxiety can actually lead them to want to simply give up on their work.  Having a teacher at the front of the classroom writing out and speaking the material is the most efficient way for students to learn the extensive amount of information that is required of them.  Keeping up with and remembering all of the deadlines for work is also a challenge for students.  In college, because the length of the classes is limited, it is vital to complete all of the work.  One forgotten assignment can be the determining force on a passing or failing grade.  Having a teacher to constantly remind students about upcoming tests and assignments decreases the chance of an accidentally missed work.  A highly important benefit to being in a traditional classroom is that the teacher is able to explain how he or she wants the student to do the work.  A rubric posted in a virtual classroom is not a good representation of how an assignment is to be completed.  Confusion and mistakes can occur which can cost students a decent grade.  Healthy student-teacher relations in a traditional classroom are nothing to take for granted when it comes to excelling in college.
A second advantage that a traditional classroom has over a virtual classroom is the positive and motivational learning environment that is provided.  When a student is at home working on a course, there are many distractions that can make focusing difficult.  Television, family, friends, cell phones, and even a comfortable couch are possible learning inhibitors.  Traditional classrooms are designed to increase students' abilities to focus on their studies; therefore, one will not find too many learning distractions while listening to the teacher.  Another motivational perk to being in a traditional setting is having other students to push you forward.  Being around other students can cause a somewhat competitive edge.  One would not want to have the lowest grade in the class, so that could push students to study harder to receive a better grade.  Not only does having other students around cause competition, it can also result in positive encouragement.  It is much easier to study when there is more than one brain at work.  In a traditional setting, students can get together after class and have study groups (Kirtman).  If one student does not understand, maybe someone else does and can give them a helping hand.  Studying alone at the house can be quite boring and monotonous.  Being able to be around other people striving for the same goals can motivate students to get up, attend class, and do well at it.  These social interactions can lead to students to have a more confident and positive look at school.  The teacher also plays an important role in the motivational aspect of a traditional classroom.  When a student sees that his teacher has faith in them and wants to see him succeed, that will result in the student working hard to show that the teacher is right.  This gives students an extra boost of self-esteem they need.
A final reason that traditional classrooms are the better alternative is that there is a more profound sense of work ethic.  "[F]or students in the traditional setting, a minimum of 3 hours (one class session) were spent on each topic. For the online students, there was no way to know exactly how much time (more or less) was spent on each of the course topics" (Kirtman).  Students who take online classes can do the bare minimum and just get by in the class.  At least in a traditional classroom, students are required to spend a certain amount of time in class learning.  Students with bad work ethic can enroll in an online class and simply have or pay someone else to do their work.  Instances such as these are impossible when it comes to an actual classroom.  It is almost completely impossible to ensure that the person enrolled in the course is the one actually doing the work.  Another issue with work ethic in an online course is that students can use books, notes, internet, and other people to help them complete quizzes and tests.  Poor work ethic such as this results in a poor work force in the future.  If students are using other resources to complete assignments, they are not using their brains; therefore, they are not actually learning anything.    When students attend online classes they are required to answer questions in class, take all their tests in front of the professor, and prove that they deserve to pass the class.  Work ethic is a big deal when looking at the differences between traditional and virtual classrooms.
Three of the many advantages that traditional classroom have over virtual classrooms are improved student-teacher relations, a positive and motivational environment, and better sense of work ethic.  Students are able to learn from the teacher face-to-face, socialize and gain motivation from their surroundings, and exert the amount of work ethic that is required of them.  "It could be concluded that faculty do not have the skill set or tools for transferring traditional classroom learning to the online environment effectively" (Statistical Analysis of IS Courses).

PUFF PUFF PASS

Imagine being middle aged and on an oxygen tank for the rest of your life. This is just one major consequence smoking can cause. As a smoker myself, I have experienced firsthand, the harmful effects cigarettes have caused over the years. For example, as someone who was active in sports through out high school, years after, I am now finding it difficult to perform at the level I once did before I started smoking. Through out the years I have tried many methods to help quit smoking. I have found E-Cigarettes to be the most healthy alternative, cost efficient, and environmentally friendly method to quit the bad habit.
E-Cigarettes are a healthy alternative because they do not contain any chemicals other then nicotine, distilled water, natural flavors, and citric acid. Point blank, e-cigarettes have the same ingredients as most common food items. For example, citric acid is found in oranges and we all have drank distilled bottle water. In contrary, over four thousand chemicals are produced in cigarette smoke, and about sixty-nine of those are cancer causing. Healthy lung cells are said to become cancerous due to the chemical hydrogen peroxide, a deadly chemical found in cigarettes. Other major diseases connected with cigarette smoking include high blood pressure and heart disease. It’s safe to say, cigarettes come with high cost.
Speaking of cost, I find E-Cigarettes to be very cost efficient. I used to spend about six bucks a day on a pack of cigarettes. Annually, that’s an estimate of twenty-two hundred dollars spent on tobacco. However, E-Cigarettes are designed to be an affordable alternative. The BLU- brand E-Cigarettes are a great example due to the fact that they have a rechargeable model. Basically, the unit is broken down into two halves. The first half is the rechargeable battery, the second half consists of what is called a “cartomizer”, which is a little capsule filled with the nicotine and distilled water. Each capsule is about two hundred and fifty puffs or equivalent to a single pack of cigarettes. A box of cartomizers comes with five units and cost roughly twelve dollars. In simpler terms, you’re paying for two packs of cigarettes and receiving three for free. Thus concluding that E-Cigarettes are indeed cheaper then traditional tobacco cigarettes.
In addition to being cost efficient, E-Cigarettes are also environmentally friendly.  Just by personal observation, I could feel the plastic and metal components of the device, which are both recyclable materials. Moreover E-Cigarettes do not produce harmful second-hand smoke, as traditional tobacco cigarettes are known to do. Recall, there where over 4000 chemicals in regular cigarettes and only water vapor and nicotine in E-Cigarettes. Thus meaning E-Cigarettes may be allowed to be smoked anywhere because their’ only by product is water vapor.
Even though I highly recommend E-Cigarettes as a better alternative to traditional tobacco smoking, some people still disagree. The fact is, electric cigarettes are new to the market and not enough research has been done to fully satisfy the idea of being a healthier alternative. Mainly because the idea that E-Cigarettes are targeting adolescents to become addicted to the product. By all means I would agree to regulate the sale of these products to minors. However, after one week of using E-Cigs my self, I’ve been able to say, “No I would not like a cigarette, I’ll PASS!”

Young and Inky

When you hear the word tattoo, what comes to mind? Maybe some motorcycle gang out west or an ancient tribe somewhere in Africa, but what about college students? Today more and more college students are finding their way to a tattoo parlor getting permanently injected with ink, paying crazy amounts of money, and enduring what some might consider excruciating pain.

Tattoo ink, what’s in that stuff? Most of the ink contains organic materials and elements such as vegetable based pigments and even some plastic based pigments. So you’re probably wondering how does it stay under the skin and why doesn’t the immune system clear all that up. Everyone has about seven layers of skin divided into three different sections; the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, which are mostly, fat. The needle should go into the dermis. If the ink is in the epidermis, the cells push themselves outwards, therefore the tattoo would fade away. If the ink is too deep, the hypodermis, the ink will just blend into the fatty tissues. Since the body is being damaged white blood cells are sent out to get rid of the foreign materials or the ink. "The reason pigment stays there is because the pigment particles are too big to be eaten by the white cells, so they just sit there."(Laumann). All this technical talk may not sound very inviting so let me put this into a better perspective. The tattoo needle goes down just about as deep as the roots of your hair, or if you look at your wrist and see the veins, the needle would be nowhere near them. In short, hopefully this has lightened your ideas of the fact that a needle is penetrating your skin, but it really isn’t that bad.

Money isn’tcheap and neither are tattoos. You’ve probably heard that you pay by the size of the tattoo or where you get it at. A few of the things that really determine the price include the number of colors used, if it’s a custom design or not, the number of hours it takes to complete the entire tattoo, and if you go to a popular shop. Sometimes, you might even have to go back to get it touched up and that can cost anywhere between $50 to $100. What’s crazier than the price to get one is the price to it removed. Laser tattoo removal can cost anywhere between $200 and $1,000. To have one removed is not an easy process. First off, you want to be sure to find a good dermatologist. You want to make sure you are getting the proper care and treatment so the scaring isn’t too bad and so it doesn’t get infected. To be completely removed, it is going to take a few sessions, depending on the size and color of the tattoo. Some darker colors like navy blue and black will most likely not be completely gone. As mentioned earlier, the ink particles are too big to be absorbed by the body. So the laser is supposed to break down the ink into smaller particles therefore, the body can absorb the them. This explains why this process is so time consuming. You’ve probably heard or read that it hurts worse getting it removed than actually getting the tattoo done.  It wouldn’t hurt as bad as you might think. About the same pain as getting a rubber band snapped against your skin. Like most things it depends on your pain tolerance. As you could probably guess, laser removal does have its side effects. Infection, once again, could be a problem. The skin has now been exposed and is considered an open wound and should be treated as when you first got the tattoo. Since you’re getting a laser applied to your skin to break down ink particles, it can also break down your skin. Hypopigmentation is when the skin treated with the laser becomes lighter than the natural skin color and hyperpigmentation is when the treated skin becomes darker than the natural skin color. With the technology of today, it is becoming a safer and more painless procedure.

Let’s talk pain. When you get a tattoo, your skin is getting punctured over and over again by a needle. Sounds kind of painful right? As I mentioned earlier, the needle doesn’t go down very deep, unlike a shot.. When your body detects it is in pain, the brain sends out endorphins. Endorphins are a set of hormones released when severe injury occurs, often abolishing all sensation of pain. Kind of like your own personal pain reliever. The brain also sends out adrenaline; another hormone secreted by the adrenaline glands located above the kidneys and by some nerve endings. Adrenaline increases heart contraction and is usually released in a dangerous or exciting situation. Some might say these hormones are the reason people get so addicted to getting tattoos. Endorphins and adrenaline make you feel invincible and give you a feeling of release and stress free. Moreover, the body has its own way of tolerating pain.

Tattoos are not just for motorcycle gangs out west or the ancient tribes over in Africa. They are becoming more and more popular among college students today. 36% of people between the age of 18 and25 have at least one tattoo, which is a good amount of the population. So let’s face it, tattoos are getting college student attention and that won’t be changing anytime soon.

Attention Everyone: Sleep Deprivation is no joke!!!!!

Attention Everyone: Sleep Deprivation is no joke!!!!!!!

Why are we not getting sleep? Why do we even need sleep? Statistics show that people in the 25-35 age range more likely will be more affected than any other age range when you don't get enough sleep. These two questions need to be answered so that it will be known that getting sleep plays an important role in our life and should be taken very serious. It needs to be relevant of why we cant sleep, why we need sleep, and what solutions can be taken into consideration to help sleep deprivation.

A lot of controversy has gone on about sleep. Many want to know why they are incapable of sleeping like they should. Russel Foster, a circadian neuroscientist, said that the third of our life we spend getting sleep is just as important as the waking two-thirds. When we sleep, our brain processes the things we have learned. Circadian is the biological processes that occur regularly at about 24-hour interval. Humans have biological rhythms, or can be known as circadian rhythms are controlled by a biological clock. I recently found out that people with circadian rhythm sleep disorders are unable to sleep or awaken when it is needed. Foster also states that when we get less sleep, we get very tired. We start having poor memory and judgment. He mentioned that sustained stress along with lack of sleep results in suppressed immunity. This means people who are very tired are more likely to be exposed to infection and cancer. I think the main reason why we can not get sleep is because we are easily distracted. Being distracted by your electronics like your phone, t.v, or maybe a video game can cause sleep deprivation. Technology is another reason why we get distracted from our sleep. Watching t.v, keeping it on all night, and computers can disturb you getting good sleep. My last reason for why we cannot sleep is because we keep our lights on. We let our room light, computer light, t.v light, or any other light stay on which tricks our brain into thinking it is still daytime, so we end up staying awake.

Furthermore, let’s switch gears to why it is essential to get sleep. Most people can go days without sleeping, with the impression that living the vamp life is prominent. It is fun and enjoyable for the moment, but when it starts messing with your health, that is when it becomes serious. I found six reasons why sleep is necessarally needed. First reason is for learning and memory. It has been known that sleeping after learning new things increase the chance of remembering what you have just studied. For example, studying some material for a test then sleeping will help you remember what you need to know for the test the next day. Weight can also be a reason why sleep is important. Not sleeping can cause weight gain because it will start changing our appetite. Sleep deprivation affects safety. You could possibly fall asleep on the road while driving because you feel so tired. Your mood will start to change. You could become impatient, hard to concentrate, or ill. Sleep disorders can cause hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and an irregular heart. Last but not least, sleep deprivation can lead to disease. Keeping up with sleep can help fight cancer, or it will start to cause problems with the immune function

In addition to what causes sleep deprivation, there are however some solutions to help you get some sleep. Research shows that putting your entire work related things away an hour before bed will help. You put it away so that when you go to bed you will not be thinking about work. You could start dimming your lights a couple of hours before bed to avoid bright lights. Do not drink caffeinated beverages for six to nine hours before you go to sleep. You could also try keeping your cell phone out of the bedroom to prevent from being awakened by the ring from your phone. One other thing is to watch a little t.v or listen to music until you fall asleep. There are plenty of things to try when you are trying to get some sleep.

To sum all of this up, sleep is a tremendous important factor in our life. Sleep plays a bigger role in our life than what most people think. You might not think getting enough sleep won’t affect you, but indeed it will change you in ways you cannot imagine. Nobody should enjoy being tired, exhausted, ill, or forgetful. So do yourself a favor and do all you can to prevent yourself from becoming deprived from sleep. Remember, “ Sleep is God. Go Worship. Amen to that.”- Jim Butcher.

Wildlife Conservation

Wildlife conservation an act of saving the endangered or threaten species has become a huge asset in order to save the beauty and the value of our wildlife. Though many hunters and other people that are over using our natural resources plentiful as they want, the wildlife population and aesthetic value is diminishing. The Federal government or the Department of Natural Resources otherwise known as “DNR” have passed certain law to tell the people what they can and can’t do to the wildlife to be able to conserve it. Many factors that contribute to the set of conservation laws are overhunting/ overfishing, loss of habitat for the animals, and “Pesticides/ Toxic Chemicals”.

Overhunting/ Overfishing” or known as “Poaching” is a big reason why conservation laws have been set. Poaching is when game animals such as deer, bears, fish, or any other game animals have been hunted or fished for illegally. Poachers often hunting or fish out of season and take large amounts of the prized animal at a time going over the limit set which causes a drastic drop in the animal’s population. For an example poachers will do anything to get the animal that they are after such as deer they will spot light them so they can get what they are after, they will illegally bait ducks and turkeys with food plots, and go out of season just to get what they are hunting for. And there have been certain laws that have been put into action to help to stop the poachers such as the endangered species act, the migratory bird treaty, and the wild bird conservation act. The main act that has been put together for poachers is the endangered species act. Because it stops poachers from being able to import of animals that are illegal at the time either they are traded out of the season or the poacher went past its limit of animals he could kill that day or in that season. Another thing that the law has put into place is that poachers can’t use certain animal species for foreign commerce. Even though that poachers contribute to the main cause that wildlife conservation has been put in place loss of habitat is another reason that conservation laws have been put into action.

Loss of habitat is destruction of the animal’s area that surrounds the certain species and they can no longer survive in that particular area. A major reason why it hurts the wildlife so bad is because the animal will not have any shelter, food, water, or the right amount of nutrients it needs to survive causing them to go off into unknown or rural areas. Major causes of their loss of habitat are logging, global warming, and pollution. Logging for example cuts all the animals’ surroundings down to where they will not have a place to live or their vegetation to keep and maintain to be a healthy animal causing the animal to die of starvation or diseases they have gotten from being away from their natural habitats. Global warming causes loss of habitat because it affects the animal’s niche so they will not be able to adapt to colder or harsh weather if they are not used to it causing their vegetation to die off and leaving them off to die. Pollution is killing off most of the animals because people riding down the road want to throw their trash out causing the trash get in to the animal’s environment which the animals eat it and makes them die. Loss of habitat is mainly people as a whole because the human population is destroying the animal’s habit so they will not be able to survive.

One thing that most people that should be concerned with about is when pesticides and toxic chemical come into contact with certain animals and plants that we eat every day causing people to get sick and not knowing why. Toxic Chemicals can come into contact with animals when people that dump waste such as different oils, nuclear waste, and different pesticides into to the wildlife environment causing the animal to become sick. Many people eat animals causing people to get sick thanks to the others who dumped the waste in to the animal’s environment. For example, a company is demanded by their boss to go and dump different waste that is very harmful to wildlife in their environment. The wildlife comes and eats their vegetation as normal gets sick because of somebody’s mistake which make the certain species dies off making the animal to either become endangered or even instinct.

From poachers, loss of habitat, and pesticides/toxic chemicals, people are the main cause that the wildlife population is diminishing very rapidly. Without wildlife conservation laws put into place many of the animals would be instinct.

ARE YOU READY?

Are you ready?

“Don’t cry because it’s over, Smile because it happened.” This is a phrase most graduates are fond of, spoken by the late Dr. Seuss.  Graduation comes in different stages such as Elementary school to Middle school, Middle school to High school, and High school to College.  While in your senior year of high school teachers and counselors try their “best” to prepare you for the next step in life. Whether or not this is properly conducted, it is believed high school prepares you for college. However, I know from personal experience that high school doesn't prepare you to be organized, to be prepared financially, or to enter the work force.
“Gosh I don’t feel like doing homework!” “Wow I can’t find my study guide anywhere!” “The Kappa’s are having party tonight but I have to study for final exams!”  College students face situations like these throughout their college experience. However, in college you have to be well organized and independent, In high school, organization and independence is not as essential. High school students are pampered and sometimes are excused for late submissions. Time management, organization, and self-discipline are not enforced in high school. Moreover, in college, these skills become a necessity.  Action needs to be taken by high school administrations and teachers across the nation in order to establish better execution of the student’s time management, organization, and self-discipline.  As proven by statistics from “The Washington Times” article on “Data: High school students aren't ready for college.” The nations’ 2012 SAT scores fell drastically than previous scores. Possible reasons being may include poor time management and bad study habits due to the lack of self-discipline. (majority)

Senior year, students are frequently reminded to purchase senior supplies, yearbooks, pictures, and their ticket to the senior trip. However, teachers and counselors don’t motivate students enough to do scholarships and they don’t explain the concept of FAFSA well.  College tuition is a lot more expensive than most high school students predict. They overlook books, meal tickets, and room and board. High school doesn't prepare students for the financial struggles that they will face for the next 4-5 years after graduation. Proven by statics public 4 year college/universities tuition rose up 15% between 2008 & 2010.   (increases) Statistics have also proven that tuition has sprouted higher cost than medical bills and the cost of living from 1978-2008. (Inflation)
The cost of tuition is still increasing each year.  High school teachers and administration around the nation need to start enforcing stricter notice towards scholarships. “Money doesn't grow on trees” but there are other ways to collect money for college that high school didn't enforce.
Friday nights; as a high school student meant football games and hanging out with friends. However, some students were at home typing scholarship essays or at work racking up money for college. While in high school an occupation just seems to be another regular duty. Moreover, for others it is a way for establishing morals for becoming a better citizen and a college student. High schools around the country don’t voice the importance of a job enough for students and upcoming college freshmen. With a job comes the teachings of time management, willpower, and how to become independent. While in college all of these qualities become everyday routine and will benefit you in the long run. High schools should become more “life essential” and teach the basics of what you will face in college and in the real world. An article posted on the website “teenink.com” stated that “High schools should have more classes that involve teaching students what is essential to live here in the United States.Having classes like such can better prepare our students for college and the real world! (plan)
Education is power in our current society! Education is power because without proper education you can’t further job opportunities or become a successfully educated citizen. Therefore, it is essential that all high schools around the globe are preparing students for graduation and their next step in life. High school doesn’t prepare students for college or the real world accurately. Our nation is calling for additional jobs and better qualified citizens to emerge. Time management, organization, self-discipline, and learning how to be financially stable are all traits our students need in order to become prosperous. Because as a nation we need to become smarter and more prepared to live!

Study Habits among students

Many college students struggle in academics only because they do not know their learning style. If a student knew their learning style, then they could develop a routine in each class for taking notes and reviewing the material that same day.  This way college students would feel more confident in class, while studying, and when it is time to take the test.  In order to be more successful, college students need to find out how they learn, develop better note taking skills, and spend more time preparing for tests.

Learning skills are very important to a student’s success. If students would figure out how they learn best in their early years of schooling they would be more successful in college. This would also help in their career after college. The way a student learns can vary in many ways including hands-on learning, auditory learning, reading and writing the information, and visual learning.  Teachers may not meet all of these learning styles in a classroom, so in order to do well in their classes, students need to implement their specific learning style into their study habits.  For example, if a student is a hands-on learner, he or she may need to find a way to experience the subject matter in order to retain it best.  On the other hand if the student is an auditory learner, he or she will have an easier time retaining information during lectures. Once a student understands how he or she learns best, and begins implementing these skills into their study habits they will find that they better understand the material and experience more success in their education.  The earlier students understand their learning styles, the better it is for them when they get to college. The students that are prepared will know how to learn effectively and their grades will reflect that.  These students will not be among the struggling freshmen, but will quickly adapt to the college academic lifestyle.

A key thing to better note taking skills is to learn just how your professor teaches.  Once understanding his or her ways of teachings you can find out what is the most important information. Then know to take notes on certain information instead of the unnecessary stuff that will not be on the test.  It is best you learn how you take notes.  Taking notes helps to be able to study the key ideas from the material and to always be studying the right information. Better note taking skills is just another way to get your GPA and grades where they need to be. From self-experience taking notes can be a very good learning style. Notes always seem to be a hassle to most students but many realize how much information is retained from taking notes and rewriting them. Another beneficial way to retain information when taking notes is to sum up the main idea of each note on flash cards. This way the student is taking the notes, rewriting them, and then writing them again in a different way on a flash card. Each student should not only know their learning style but also make a routine for themselves to create superb study habits.

It is a proven fact that students create this constant anxiety from struggling with learning related issues. This anxiety in students was found to be “an important negative predictor of performance” (Crede and Kuncel) that affected grades on schoolwork. If a student knew his or her learning stragedy, it not only shows a rise in grades but also takes away all their school related stress. Certain students might find that they need to practice more than one learning style to succeed with their studies. A student could use multiple learning styles at one time for studying certain subjects or even “use different styles in different circumstances” (learning-styles-online).  Through self-experience in school, I could be categorized as a student who uses multiple learning styles. Usually when I study, I look at my written notes that I took from lecture, rewrite them, draw pictures, and read aloud notes to myself to engrave the information into my head. This routine made my success in school so much easier and less stressful. A student needs to not only know which learning style(s) works best for them, but also a routine that could be setup to benefit their schoolwork the most. “Overall, study habits and skill measures improve prediction of academic performance” (Crede and Kuncel) helping students know how their brain retains information best.

If you want to be successful this is what you need to do. You future is in your hands what you do with it is up to you.  In order to be more successful as a college student you need to find out how you learn, develop better note taking skills, and last but not least spend more time preparing for tests.
