Profile: Donnie Brown

I want you all to meet a man named Donnie. When you first meet him, you may feel intimidated, but once you talk to him, he is actually a really nice person.  If you were to ask where he is from you'd find out he is a local from Conway, SC. and has lived there his whole life. Growing up, he considered his Mamie as his role model. She was also the person who raised and his two brothers. One of his most memorable childhood memories was at the age of seven or eight. He was cat fishing and thought he had caught a fish. This fish he thought he had caught turned out to be a snake. He might not have done well in school, but math was and still is an easy subject for him: history being his least favorite.

As of right now he is the young age of 26, married, is currently unemployed, but takes care of his four kids when he's not in school. Donnie is currently working on a Bachelor in Science in Criminal Justice, specializing in human services. When deciding his major, he knew he wanted to work with people. with this degree, he plans to be a case worker.  When ask what he wants out of life, his response was, "A good job, a half-acre of land, and a healthy family." Some hobbies he's interested in include fishing, camping, and partying by the river as well as playing pool. He also likes to watch Clemson football and Nascar.

I may have only just met Donnie, but I feel he is a very nice and genuine person. He seemed to be very sociable, and more willing to ask questions then I was.

Unexpected Expectations

We are living in a cold, cold world.  People helping others is very rare.  You will find someone who is willing to help someone else only on few occasions.  During certain times of the year you always hear about people doing things for the cause, for example, the secret santa, who goes around giving people money. On the other hand, you have people who help people year round by doing food boxes, soup kitchens, and donating clothes. Some people help others out of the kindness of their heart, and not expecting anything in return. During a helping hand experience she found out the man that she sees frequently is very wealthy.
Courtney Moore was born in Ellenwood, Georgia, but later moved to South Carolina. By joining the local clubs, she found enjoyment in helping others.  Courtney Moore is currently attending Horry-Georgetown Technical College, where she is seeking a degree in Science, which she hopes to use in the future to help people. Courtney is also a member of the Anchor Club, and is willing to volunteer her time with the Humane Society.  Ever since childhood it has always been in her nature to help people. Helping people has its perks because you get to learn interesting facts about them.
During various volunteer trips Courtney would often see a homeless man who stood out from the rest.  The weather could be in the hundred’s, hot enough to cook an egg on the side

walk, and he would be seen wearing a long black trench coat with a radio on his shoulder. The man appeared to be in his early forties, with an upbeat persona, regardless of his situation.

One particular time, at the soup kitchen, Courtney had a chance to talk to the man.  She  asked him his name. He said his name was John, but he never gave a last name. He was very friendly, and would do anything to uplift people when they were having a bad day.  They became good friends. She would always give John extra food when he passed through the food section where she was serving.  On days when they didn't do the soup kitchen, and she would see John going to the dumpster looking for food, she would stop and give him some money to get food.   In the middle of the year Courtney stopped seeing John.  She didn't see him walking anymore around town or going to the soup kitchen.  John disappeared.  Courtney began to ask various people had they seen him.  Soon he was the talk of the town.
John was found in his home, dead, were he had been rotting for a month. A large quantity of money was also discovered. John had been living as a poor person ever since Courtney knew him. The police tried to find the next of kin to release all the money to that he left behind.

Courtney’s volunteer work at the soup kitchen taught her a valuable lesson.  The lesson was, you never know who you may run into, so you should always treat people nice.  She still does volunteer work, and helps out whenever it is needed.  Courtney hopes to continue her volunteer work when she moves away.

Hit The Mats

From hunting to fishing, Joel Stevens may just seem like your average country boy, but this redneck has a state championship ring on his finger. Wrestling is a sport in which two opponents struggle hand to hand in order to pin or press each other's shoulders to the mat or ground, with the style, rules, and regulations differing widely in amateur and professional matches. Joel doesn’t compete in matches like WWE or TNA, where the matches are set up; he competed in real events where the results of the matches weren’t determined until the last person was pinned. His wrestling career was determined by many years of dedication and doing what was needed to compete.
Stevens has put years of dedication into wrestling. He recently wrestled for Loris High School, but he has been wrestling for 7 years. He started wrestling to help get his anger out, and it worked. Joel jokes about being the only white boy on his team, but with a record like his, color doesn’t matter. Wrestling may seem easy, but it can be hard work.
Many have heard of cutting weight - practice of rapid weight loss prior to a sporting competition - and ridiculous stories from it. There are stories of buying aluminum foil outfits or making them, to go sit in a hot car in a field, to melt away the weight, but that isn’t Stevens’ view on the matter. He worked the old fashioned way to lose his weight. He ran a lot and just cut back on eating. Before matches, he and his team would run around and stretch. They didn’t have any big speeches from their coach or a certain way to prep for the game. There wasn’t any special warm-up music or crazy bus stories. He was just an average guy, with his average team that made history that day for their school.

In 2010, Stevens and his team both broke records. His team had won the state championship, but Joel himself had beaten the #2 guy in the state. He had pinned him in three minutes, with a score of 15-13. Loris High School finished their year with a record of 23-13. It may not seem like much, but Stevens’ and his teams’ dedication had finally paid off. They didn’t go out and have a huge celebration; it was just another day that made a huge impact on Stevens’ life.

The Summers of William Lee

Summer is usually all about having fun and hanging out with friends, but for ten days out of his summer William Lee is working hard to bring joy to someone else's life. For the past three summers, William has gone on three different missionary trips with his church. He has been to New Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras to build houses for people in need. While building houses, William also found his career, which is in the construction or engineering field.

For every mission trip that William has been on, they had to have a tour guide because in some areas it could not be safe for them. They would have ten days to demolish a house and build a new one. They demolished the house in Honduras within fifteen minutes with their hands, they didnt even have to use tools. The people that they help usually have about fifteen people living in the same house. This was a humbling experience for William because he got to see how these people had to live their everyday lives.

In New Mexico, William and his church members stayed in a Holiday Inn with a ten foot wall surrounding it. On all of their mission trips for the ten days that they were there they would eat ethnic food and even have bean burritos for breakfast. For most of their trip they would work hard, but in Guatemala and Honduras they got to have a little bit of fun. In Honduras they got to go zip lining and in Guatemala they got to hike and experience the Mayan Ruins.

For William to take time out of his summer to help other people truly shows how great of a person that he is. On these trips William didn't complain about where he had to stay or about having to eat ethnic food every day because he knew that this was benefiting someone other than himself. It also shows what good characteristics he has like being concerned for other people and helping to make people's live's better. John Bunyan once said, ''You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.'' Even though these people in New Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, can never repay him, he still continues to go every summer and help someone less fortunate.

Profile: Houston Carroll

It’s that time of the year again when the leaves are starting to change colors and soon they will be falling off the trees, and oh, I almost forgot, “Are you ready for some football?” It’s one of the most exciting times of the year because nothing beats the thrill of watching your favorite football team score a touchdown. I may enjoy football season, but I know Houston Carrol is ecstatic when football season comes around.

Houston Carroll played for Aynor High School varsity football team as the starting tight end for three years. Even though when he started in ninth grade, the teams record was one win and nine losses, by the end of his senior year they had improve their record to eight wins and four losses, and, for the first time in Aynor history, they finally beat Marion High School. When I was interviewing Houston, the only thing he was interested in was talking to his buddies about the upcoming football season; I could tell he was passionate about the sport, and he always will be as time passes.

Houston wants to pursue a career in Golf Turf Science, which requires a Bachelor’s degree in Turf Science from a four year university. To some people this degree may sound simple, but there is a great amount of hard work that goes in to managing a golf course because in this career Houston will have the task of judging grass, knowing the different types of soils, and managing his maintenance staff.

When asking Houston more about himself, he mentioned to me his favorite type of food is southern comfort food, such as fried chicken. One of his favorite southern restaurants is the Sunny Mart Buffet, which, according to Houston, has the best fried chicken you will ever have in your life. Another insight to Houston was finding out where his favorite place was to go to relax. He likes anyplace that has a beautiful view, which gave me the impression that he really enjoyed the outdoors. It was later confirmed that Houston loves to hunt and has the same passion for hunting as he does for football.

After conducting the interview, I found out that Houston is in love with sports, wheather it is football or golf. If Houston keeps his passion alive for sports, he will have a promising career for years to come. So I ask you again, “ Are you ready for some football?”

Anthony is the middle child out of his siblings. He has a twenty-year old brother named D.J and a twelve-year old sister named Gianna. Anthony currently stays in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He and his family moved down here because of his father’s job occupation. Frank enjoys staying here.             Just like every other person in this world Anthony Frank has a dream. A dream in which he is to be a successful individual who owns his own business. His business, however, is currently undecided because of his variety of interests. Also, Anthony dreams insist of moving somewhere new in the states, somewhere different. Quentin Gore's Profile

To get Quentin Gore's attention really quick, all you have to do is drive by with a nice truck. Quentin was born in Loris and raised in Aynor, South Carolina and the only thing he loves more than hunting is driving his truck. He currently is attending Horry Georgetown Technical College for an Associate’s Degree in Science with an emphasis on Business. Although his transition into college has been great, he is already missing High School where he played baseball, football, and basketball.

When he was growing up, he could tell Aynor was perfect for him, and has no intention of leaving even after he graduates. He likes how it is a small town where everyone knows each
other. He is the type of guy who prefers dirt roads over a paved one; he would rather drive through a foot of mud than drive on the interstate. He enjoys the outdoors and tries to stay as active as possible, weather he is hunting, playing a sport, or just hanging out
with friends, he is rarely not busy. As active as he stays, he usually needs a nice cold drink. I call him crazy but he has a Yeti Cooler which is a 300$ Cooler which stays in the back of his truck that is usually filled with water, coke or Mountain Dew.

I have only attended 2 classes with Quentin and I can already tell he is a laid back, chill and easy going person. When I asked him to describe himself he replied "I would consider myself as tall, tan, athletic, and understanding", and I would agree! One interesting fact about Quentin is that he really likes expensive glasses, whether they are Ray Bans, Costas or Oakley’s you can almost guarantee he will be wearing them. Another thing he really cares about is his family; he has one brother and one sister and lives with his parents.

Although he is only 18, he has a pretty good plan for himself after he graduates and gets his degree. He plans on graduating and finding a job with his degree. He plans on staying in Aynor, finding a wife and starting a family, he will be willing to relocate but that is only if he has too. He has a dream truck of owning a 2500 GMC Sierra Denali, with the biggest size of a Yeti Cooler possible in the bed of it. Although his dreams are high, with the ambition and motivation he has I think he has potential to make all of his dreams come true, and than some.

Nick Seely, Inspiring Photographer

Born April 25th, 1993 in Atlanta, GA, Nick Seely grew up as an only child. Since age thirteen, Nick has always loved art and photography. All throughout high school, he had award-winning artwork within his school’s art show. Shortly after graduating high school, Nick moved to Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
Currently, Seely studies at Horry Georgetown Technical College. He has plans of majoring in business with a minor in photography. Nick not only enjoys photography, but he also has an interest in a slight more vulgar type of art influenced by an artist by the name of Allex Pardee. Mr. Pardee’s artwork would remind you of something you would see in a tattoo parlor. Paintings of demon like looking animals with a mixture of abstract are just a few examples. On a more subtle side, Nick enjoys photos in National Geographic. He has hopes of someday taking photos for similar magazines. Locally, Nick sells some of his artwork in North Myrtle Beach.  He also works at Abercrombie and Fitch to help support himself through college. However, with hopes of being a “big-time” photographer, Nick plans to move somewhere like California where his idol, Allex Pardee, is from.
All in all I find Nick Seely to be the normal, motivated, young adult with hopes and dreams. I find his taste in the artwork of Allex Pardee interesting and odd due to the graphic nature of his paintings, and this makes me believe that Nick might have a bit of a dark side to him. I feel I can relate to Nick’s odd interest, due to the fact that I study dentistry. Most people would not want to stick their hands in others mouths. We both have interests in odd art forms.

Profiles: Brandon Lowrimore

Today I am reading you all a profile about Brandon Lowrimore. Brandon Lowrimore is 18 years old. Born on October 17, 1994 in Charleston, SC but raised in Georgetown. Brandon has one sibling, who is his younger brother, which makes him the oldest. He went to Georgetown High School where his favorite subjects were math and science. He currently attends Horry-Georgetown Technical College where he is majoring in Physical Therapy.

I started asking him for some key facts about himself. Brandon described his personality as being a short-tempered person, shy, and friendly once he gets to know you. His hobbies are surfing, duck-hunting, and listening to music. His favorite music is Rap and Country. His favorite artists are Mack Mill and Conway Twitty. I asked if he had a favorite food and ice cream. His reply was steak, fried chicken, junk food, chocolate, and birthday cake ice cream. His favorite colors are lime green and orange. His favorite teams are Clemson, Green Bay, and The Braves.

I think everyone has accomplishments throughout their life that doesn't necessarily have to deal with sports. Once accomplishment not pertaining to sports of Brandon's was having A B Honor Roll throughout high school. He also mentioned one more accomplishment, which was football. Brandon played for Georgetown High School where he was the running back and the corner back. I am assuming that Brandon Lowrimore must have been very good and talented when it came to playing football if he had the chance to play more than one position. He told me he played football since he was eight years old. The Georgetown High School mascot is the Bulldogs, and their colors are navy blue and grey.

Brandon wants to be a physical therapist one day after he receives the highest degree desired. I asked why a physical therapist? He told me that when he was playing football, he tore his ACL. While taking therapy, he became very interested in it. Brandon's goal is to get his Associates Degree then transfer for another degree. He told me that he was undecided about what he will do with his degree once he gets it. I also asked what he enjoyed about football. He said he liked the rush and the adrenaline he got while being on the field. My last question for Brandon Lowrimore is there any other sport he enjoyed other than football, his answer was baseball.

While writing this profile, it seems like Brandon lives his life day by day and doesn't plan it out. His life seems full of athletic ability and determination. Throughout this profile we all learned important facts about Brandon Lowrimore's life that includes college, a future degree, and sports. Hopefully he will accomplish all his goals and become a physical therapist to help athletes with their injuries the way he got help for his.

Wesley Sheaffer, your new dentist

The sound of a buzzing drill, or the smell of the dentist office may not make people feel too comfortable, but for Wesley Sheaffer it's his soon to be new home. Wesley Sheaffer is this unique twenty-two year old college student who walks through the halls of Horry Georgetown.
Wesley was born and raised in Pennsylvania and at the young age of fifteen he was already interested in the field of dental hygiene. Dental hygiene was something he always felt like he was supposed to do with his life. With this new found passion he found himself working three years later for Bettina McBeth, a well known cosmetic dentist at the Cosmetic and Family Dentist in Gardners, Pennsylvania. Wesley was the youngest and the only male to ever work for Bettina. Wesley did not only have to work hard in earning this new position, but Wesley had to be CPR certified, First Aid Certified, and Wesley had to earn his radiology license. After working with Bettina McBeth, Wesley realized he found his new hero and inspiration. Wesley wants to one day become a great dentist, one as good as Bettina Mcbeth, as well as helping everyone he can have their perfect white smile.
Wesley decided he wanted to further his schooling career, so he began searching for a school that offered dental hygiene, an area that had an ocean, and a place that offered cheap rent. Myrtle Beach just seemed like the perfect place to go. It wasn't long before Wesley found himself in the sands of Myrtle Beach. Wesley found a job working in a restaurant called Friendly's. Wesley has now been working at Friendly's for two years, and is about to finish off his second year of college at Horry Georgetown.
Where can you find Wesley when he's not studying dental hygiene at Horry Georgetown you might ask? Well you can find Wesley participating in the night scene at the local Myrtle Beach dance clubs having fun. You could even find Wesley at the local bar watching the Miami Dolphins play football. If Wesley sounds like someone you might want to be friends with, you might want to hurry before your chance runs up. Wesley is planning on moving back to Pennsylvania shortly after this December, and will no longer be around. So if you need some dental advice, or just a great friend, Wesley is a great candidate for either job.
Out of all of the things that make up Wesley, the thing that I find to be the most special, and respectable, is his love and loyalty that he has for his family. Wesley is extremely family orientated, and no matter what situation he is in, or what is going on in his life, Wesley will drop anything to be there for his family. He will bend over backwards for the people that matter to him, and if you ask me that is an amazing quality for someone to have. I myself am someone who cares deeply about my family, and hearing that Wesley is the same way made me have that much more respect for him. There aren't many people that you meet in life that make you feel comfortable, or give off the impression that they are someone that you can trust, and have an open and normal conversation with; but when I talked to Wesley for the first time, that is how I felt. It has been a treat being able to learn more about him, and I encourage anyone who hasn't talked to him, to approach him and get to know him. Wesley Sheaffer is one guy I can honestly say is someone you will not regret talking to, I know I didn't.

Profiles: Lauren Register

Looks are very deceiving... All the pain, suffering, and sleepless nights just thinking about how she could be the very best at what she does. Lauren always dreamed about becoming a black belt to prove to the people around her that she could protect herself and that she was able to put up a fight in any situation that she was faced with. It took four years for her to accomplish her dream to become a black belt.
Starting off with a white belt she knew that it would be a long journey to become a black but she didn't care she knew what she wanted so she never gave up on her dream. The week of her first time to get up in rank which was her first test she was very nervous but she knew what she had to do to go in there and show her trainer what she was made so that she could rank up and some of the requirement that she had to meet for her first time was she had to show that she knew the basics of karate before she was able to become a white belt with a stripe which she did. Knowing that it did not take long for her to be a yellow belt.
As the years past she found what she loved to do in becoming a purple belt she knew that it would only be a few more years before she became a black belt as the training continued and she kept finding herself more and more in love with the sport of karate she did not want to give up meeting new friends and sharing the same interests as she showed. With all the support of her friends and family she became to take the sport more seriously than she ever thought possible more months of training ranking up to become a brown belt becoming more and more closer to the goal that she had set for herself so that she could prove that she more than just a girl she wanted to show that she could actually prove to herself and everyone else that she could protect herself no matter how people saw her.
Two years and three months have passed and she anticipated the day that she would become a black belt and final it was the day before her test to show not only her but the people around her who she actually was. The day before she had her test she had one more class to show herself that she was ready for the test… Everything went her way that day. After class on the long ride home she thought to herself this is the day I have been training for and its coming tomorrow morning. She went home and the restless night she had which she couldn't get it off of her mind.

The morning finally came and she was anxious to see if she would actually become a black belt her name was called she stepped on the mat and went through everything she has been training for she did everything perfect so there was no doubt in her mind that she did not make it. Sure enough she got her black belt as she started to tear up she said “looks can be very deceiving”.

Rivalry Showdown

                                                                                                                                                Swakeen 1
                                                                                                                                By: Nicole Fillmore

“Beeeeeeeep!” The referee sounded off the start to the biggest rivalry game of the season. As the roaring sound of 1200 fans overwhelmed the stands at Loris High School, Swakeem Cox took his place as right outside linebacker, on his rival’s turf. As he crouched down into position he looked like a true North Myrtle Beach Chief ready to defend his team from the Loris Lions. In those beginning moment’s Swakeem seemed to keep a calm, cool, and collective demeanor. “Before the start of the game I was just focused. Honestly I didn’t even hear the crowd around me I was just determined to win. Especially since so many people doubted us and thought we were going to get whooped,” he says.

After coming back from an injury that had kept him out of playing, Swakeem also felt like he had something to prove. “After getting a high sprain from a tackle at one of our practices I had a lot to prove. This was my first game back and I was starting. There was no way I was going to let all those ice baths and rehabilitation go to waste.” As the game was set in motion, the Chiefs were putting up a good fight. They were taking the Lions out using the best defense plays they had to hold them off. Going into half time the score was still 0-0, but when the buzzer set off the start to the third quarter, things had taken a turn for the worst.

Fumble! All you could see were flashes of jerseys piling on top of each other in one giant doggy pile, fighting for the football like it was a million dollar check. As the referees ran over to unravel the heap of men, the Lions ended up with the ultimate price, making the next play theirs. Shakeem recalls that very angering moment: “It was very frustrating seeing them come out with that fumble. We were losing stamina and the last thing I wanted was them to have the upper hand going into the third quarter, but the game wasn’t over and we were still going to fight for the win.” As the lions took their place on the field another surprise came. The Chiefs saw the Lions had switched their formation to the Chiefs formation. “We didn’t know what to do, we never practiced that type of double play to defend our own play,” Shakeem admitted. Even as the Chiefs did their best to defend the play their attempt failed and the Lions took off for a 40 yard touchdown.

As faith started to alter in Shakeem and his teammates he recalls the moment that kept them motivated to keep playing. “Even though we were losing, not once did our fans stop cheering or our band stop playing. It definitely helped motivate us by knowing there were people there who supported us.” After that forty yard dash the fourth quarter was here, the score 14-0. Do or die, the Chiefs were managing to hold off the Lions even though they were exhausted by all means. Bam! Just like that Swakeem recalls his team’s linebacker going down.  In those final moments the linebackers’ muscles had frozen up and just like that the Lions were heading down for the touchdown. Swakeem recalls his teammates running their hearts out to try and catch the rival with the football.

The final score leaving the field that night was 21-0, but that didn’t seem to get Swakeem down. “Honestly that was my favorite game, because even though we lost we never gave up. Not to mention I had been with that team for three years and that is the hardest I have seen us work as a team.” As Swakeem went on to tell more about the games he played with his team you could tell it was definitely a passion of his. “Football is definitely a part of me. It helped me stay out of trouble; it inspired me to do better in school; all in all it helped me get through high school.”

Profile: Adventures of Alison Gore

I believe that life is full of adventures and who does not like adventures? Some adventures can be ones of fun and games, but others can be dangerous. Well in Alison Gore's case, she recalls her past adventures as fun and games.

Alison was no more than a regular high school student just like some of us in here today. She attended North Myrtle Beach high school playing softball in her four years there.  In her free time she enjoyed going horseback riding on a nearby horse ranch, but the things she is most fond of is her family vacations, which often times were an adventure. On one adventure she went to Boone, North Carolina for white water rafting and canoeing. The water was cold and moving with rapids measuring on four to five scales. That's not small rapids. While getting all wrapped up in the experience of whiter water rafting, she soon realized that she was in the middle of no where in the mountains. Moving furiously down the river in ice cold water, not only did she white water raft down it, but she also canoed making the river feel a lot stronger and faster. Later in the week, she realized that she got a thrill of adrenalin from this experience. That being the case she her mom, dad, and sister went hiking to a waterfall high in the mountains. Once reaching the waterfall, Alison climbed to an open jumping, and yes, she jumped into that same ice cold water that she had been rafting down days before.

Her family soon realized the joy they get out of adventures, so they planned another trip. This time it was to Charlotte, North Carolina. Here they took part in rock climbing and sip lining. While she was rock climbing, Alison got to see inside taverns and old coal mines. Once they reached the taverns and coal mines, they hiked down them. Exploring the beautiful features of the earth and the old history of the coal mines. These are just some examples of things that she and her family take part in every year during Thanksgiving.

I think this just tells you that Alison is very adventurous and likes the rush of doing some what crazy, but at the same time not dangerous things. She is excited to see what kind of adventure her family has planned for this upcoming Thanksgiving. between all these events that she and her family have accomplished , I can only imagine what comes in her future years with her family.

Hard work, heavy breathing, grass stains, and cheers are all things we think of when on the subject of sports. However, sports come with sweat, struggles, and injuries. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. Are all collision is the violent striking of an object or person against another.
It all occurred during a soccer game on February, on Myrtle Beach's state of the art turf, Carolina Forrest's Nicole collided with a Myrtle Beach Seahawk player. The game was neck to neck, each team having one goal. Going into the 2nd period Nicole waited anxiously as she watched Seahawk green and Panther burgundy battle for the ball. Seconds later, a Myrtle Beach forward came down field and Nicole fell into stance at goalie. Bracing her blue eyes on what she was going to be a big play, Nicole was interrupted by a "Snap, Crack, and Pop." Nicole made her way onto the sideline under on power in excruciating pain. While bracing her knee on the sideline, thoughts raced through her head, "That's it... I'm done...It's Over!" The burgundy Panthers went on without her, victorious over the Seahawks.
Two weeks after the game Nicole visited the knee therapist. SHE HAD TORN HER ACL! Nicole went through her senior year never playing in a game of soccer again. The specialist told Nicole that she had torn her ACL completely, and needed to have immediate surgery. In addition to several weeks of therapy, Nicole would need a cartilage replacement surgery. Challenges of learning how to get dressed, walk properly, and use the bathroom lingered in the future.
Months went on and Nicole regained all of her strength and learned everything properly. Due to the challenge and goals she was forced to face, Nicole believes the surgery and physical therapy made her a stronger person.
