Unexpected Expectations

We are living in a cold, cold world.  People helping others is very rare.  You will find someone who is willing to help someone else only on few occasions.  During certain times of the year you always hear about people doing things for the cause, for example, the secret santa, who goes around giving people money. On the other hand, you have people who help people year round by doing food boxes, soup kitchens, and donating clothes. Some people help others out of the kindness of their heart, and not expecting anything in return. During a helping hand experience she found out the man that she sees frequently is very wealthy. 

Courtney Moore was born in Ellenwood, Georgia, but later moved to South Carolina. By joining the local clubs, she found enjoyment in helping others.  Courtney Moore is currently attending Horry-Georgetown Technical College, where she is seeking a degree in Science, which she hopes to use in the future to help people. Courtney is also a member of the Anchor Club, and is willing to volunteer her time with the Humane Society.  Ever since childhood it has always been in her nature to help people. Helping people has its perks because you get to learn interesting facts about them.

During various volunteer trips Courtney would often see a homeless man who stood out from the rest.  The weather could be in the hundred’s, hot enough to cook an egg on the side 

walk, and he would be seen wearing a long black trench coat with a radio on his shoulder. The man appeared to be in his early forties, with an upbeat persona, regardless of his situation.  

One particular time, at the soup kitchen, Courtney had a chance to talk to the man.  She  asked him his name. He said his name was John, but he never gave a last name. He was very friendly, and would do anything to uplift people when they were having a bad day.  They became good friends. She would always give John extra food when he passed through the food section where she was serving.  On days when they didn't do the soup kitchen, and she would see John going to the dumpster looking for food, she would stop and give him some money to get food.   In the middle of the year Courtney stopped seeing John.  She didn't see him walking anymore around town or going to the soup kitchen.  John disappeared.  Courtney began to ask various people had they seen him.  Soon he was the talk of the town.  

John was found in his home, dead, were he had been rotting for a month. A large quantity of money was also discovered. John had been living as a poor person ever since Courtney knew him. The police tried to find the next of kin to release all the money to that he left behind.

Courtney’s volunteer work at the soup kitchen taught her a valuable lesson.  The lesson was, you never know who you may run into, so you should always treat people nice.  She still does volunteer work, and helps out whenever it is needed.  Courtney hopes to continue her volunteer work when she moves away.
