Study Habits Among Students (Revised)

Many college students struggle in academics only because they do not know their learning style. If a student’s knew their learning style, then they could develop a routine in each class for taking notes and reviewing the material that same day. This way college students would feel more confident in class, while studying, and when it is time to take the test. In order to be more successful, college students need to find out how they learn, develop better note taking skills, and spend more time preparing for tests.

Learning skills are very important to a student’s success. If students would figure out how they learn best in their early years of schooling they would be more successful in college. This would also help in their career after college. The way a student learns can vary in many ways including hands-on learning, auditory learning, reading and writing the information, and visual learning. Teachers may not meet all of these learning styles in a classroom, so in order to do well in their classes; students need to implement their specific learning style into their study habits. For example, if a student is a hands-on learner, he or she may need to find a way to experience the subject matter in order to retain it best. On the other hand, if the student is an auditory learner, he or she will have an easier time retaining information during lectures. Once a student understands how he or she learns best, and begins implementing these skills into their study habits they will find that they better understand the material and experience more success in their education. The earlier students understand their learning styles, the better it is for them when they get to college. The students that are prepared will know how to learn effectively and their grades will reflect that. These students will not be among the struggling freshmen, but will quickly adapt to the college academic lifestyle.

A key thing to better note taking skills is to learn just how your professor teaches. Once understanding his or her ways of teachings you can find out what is the most important information. Then know to take notes on certain information instead of the unnecessary stuff that will not be on the test. It is best you learn how you take notes. Taking notes helps to be able to study the key ideas from the material and to always be studying the right information. Better note taking skills is just another way to get your GPA and grades where they need to be. From self-experience taking notes can be a very good learning style. Notes always seem to be a hassle to most students but many realize how much information is retained from taking notes and rewriting them. Another beneficial way to retain information when taking notes is to sum up the main idea of each note on flash cards. This way the student is taking the notes, rewriting them, and then writing them again in a different way on a flash card. Each student should not only know their learning style but also make a routine for themselves to create superb study habits.

It is a proven fact that students create this constant anxiety from struggling with learning related issues. This anxiety in students was found to be “an important negative predictor of performance” (Crede  and Kuncel) that affected grades on schoolwork. If a student knew his or her learning strategy, it not only shows a rise in grades but also takes away all their school related stress. Certain students might find that they need to practice more than one learning style to succeed with their studies. A student could use multiple learning styles at one time for studying certain subjects or even “use different styles in different circumstances” (learning-styles-online). Through self-experience in school, I could be categorized as a student who uses multiple learning styles. Usually when I study, I look at my written notes that I took from lecture, rewrite them, draw pictures, and read aloud notes to myself to engrave the information into my head. This routine made my success in school so much easier and less stressful. A student needs to not only know which learning style(s) works best for them, but also a routine that could be setup to benefit their schoolwork the most. “Overall, study habits and skill measures improve prediction of academic performance” (Crede and Kuncel) helping students know how their brain retains information best.

If you want to be successful this is what you need to do. You future is in your hands what you do with it is up to you. In order to be more successful as a college student you need to find out how you learn, develop better note taking skills, and last but not least spend more time preparing for tests.

Daria Desires

MonDesire made some strong and compelling statements that were very easy to be convinced by.

agree with her argument about racism playing a part in the majority of most government operations.

Anytime a person is forced to do something against their will it is wrong, but when statistics show that a

noticeably higher percentage of those victims are of a minority, it is prejudice.  MonDesire argued

that the problem could be minimized if Customs officials would just search everyone who travels out of

the country rather than picking those whom they wish to search because they look suspicious.  Also,

she strongly believed that she was singled out because of her race.  For Example, MonDesire stated that

she was the only African American on her flight, and that no other person on that flight was strip

searched.  In another statement, she mentioned a searched fifteen year old who traveled with her

caucasian mother and aunt, who were not searched. This information gives indication that African

Americans are prejudged before they are ever given a chance.  Being that she was raped, the search

played a part to her emotion breakdown.  I felt like if they would have picked more people off that

flight that she wouldn’t felt as bad about the search.  Searching people before you get on your flight is

something that frequent flyers have to go through but don’t single people out because of their race.

To be stripped or not to be stripped

Daria Mondesire, one of many, states that minorities bare the brunt of examination, and I for one agree with her. Most of the people that are being strip searched  are  a minority race.  This is unfair and shows  racial profile of our security system. What if someone  has been raped as in this case with Mondesire? It brings back flashes of something tragic that happened.  It is also invasion of privacy, which is given to us by the fourth amendment.  Also, the security officer conducting these strip searches could be perverted. In this case he is molesting people and that too is  against the law.  Over all I agree with Mondesire that racial profiling should not be a reason to strip search individuals only being based on suspicion or evidence.

stripped of my rights

According to the views in this article I do agree with MonDesire. I believe that people in an airport should go through security and metal detectors but never go through a strip search. Strip searches are more for when the authorities have probable cause to check criminals or people in jail. Most of the passengers “were found to only be carrying nothing more than memories of a Caribbean Honeymoon” (MonDesire) or random souvenirs from a special trip. Strip searching would be invading the privacy of many Americans and taking away their free rights. Multiple people do smuggle drugs or illegal things through airports but that does not mean that every person should be asked to take off their clothes and touched. According to MonDesire’s thoughts and beliefs I do believe that it is wrong to strip search personally take away someone’s right and randomly perform strip searches in airports.

Multiple people get stripped search every day. People have different thoughts when they are searched. After reading MonDesire’s article, I completely disagree. Mon Desire is leaning more toward her feelings more than the facts. I truly believe that Mon Desire behaving rediciously.  Security at the airport is following safety procedures to keep the passengers safe.  Mon Desire thinks the conflict has a lot to do with her skin color. All airports security are trained to strip down certain people who they think is acting suspicious.  Security workers are qualified to do their job after going through several months of training. It could be the way she dresses and certain behavior that could trigger airport security. Maybe she doesn’t know how to act in an airport. Mon Desire never provided us with those details. One little word or loud gesture can worry the paranoid security and passengers. Security does not want passengers to feel unsafe and do their best to make sure everybody is clean. Also, refusal to obey security is the worst for suspicious behavior in an airport.  Secondly, maybe she wears thick clothing. All airport security knows that it is easy to hide little objects in certain thick clothing. Dresses, blouses, and sports coat are good for hiding small objects. Diara Mondesire needs to get a grip and face the facts. She needs to sit down and think about any other side effects that possibly could have happened. It does not matter if our skin color is white, black, blue, green, red, or yellow, we are all equal human beings. The airport security is there to do their jobs to make sure that our passengers are safe. Daira Mondesire needs to stop living 1913 and start living 2013.

I completely agree with MonDesire. If I was in her position I would feel like the airports did not care about any privacy, that I was treated as I was going in a jail then passing through an airport, and I would feel very embarrassed. I think that any person that is not hiding anything and trying to get to there lovely vacation would be humiliated. Over all we wish this did not happen to us but then again the country we share with has some cruel people in it.

Stripped of More then My Clothes- Daria Mondesire

Daria MonDesire, the author of the article Stripped of More than My Cloths, has the right to feel victimized for being pick, out of the many people in that airport that day, to be stripped searched.  She may have the right idea when she says that she, an African American woman, was apparently picked for a strip search due to what she was wearing and not for her skin color. But, when she says everyone else that’s traveling outside the country should be searched as well, is when I disagree. As someone who travels at least once or twice a year, I would dread the day I know that I have to go through airport security just to go see my family. As well as going through security with younger siblings, I can tell you no parent, guardian, or older sibling would want to have their child or sibling go through that or even witness a child being strip-searched. MonDesire states in her argument,” Strip-search everyone who travels out of the country. Strip-search Martha Stewart… Strip-search Al Gore, members of the congress, all nine Supreme Court justices and every last one of the Daughters of the American Revolution.” (MonDesire 249)  If every single flyer was to have a full strip search, it would take every passenger more time to go through security then it already does. Have you ever waited in airport security lines? If you’re lucky, it could take you at least half an hour to get through those lines if not more. In all honesty, airport security is already a slow and tedious process. With the full body scans, and the pat downs aren't we already being searched enough?
