Is U.S. Customs taking away our rights?

No one should have to bare the striping of their clothes or their rights when traveling in and out of the country just because a federal agent decides to label them as a “potential courier.” As MonDesire says in her story 96% of the people that custom services searched were found to be carrying anything on them. Furthermore, that is very high number and they shouldn’t be able to profile someone because the constitution states that people should be protected from unreasonable search and seizures. Travelers were subjected to partial or full strip searches, x-ray exams and cavity searches. In addition, this was very degrading and uncomfortable to mostly all of the people that had to undergo this kind of treatment. It is understandable to want to limit the amount of drugs coming and going during air travel but to what degree is it not acceptable. Also MonDesire states that minorities were subjected to these examinations just because of the color of their skin. People shouldn’t have to fear the airport when boarding a plane due to the way the U.S. customs officers decide to search them. Whether someone is of a different race, has special needs, or is just an average person they shouldn’t feel as if their rights or their dignity is being taking away from them during what is supposed to be a nice trip.
